Berlin Chamber of Architects 2010

Redesign of the heart of the Chamber creates a welcoming location with a strong identity, using what could be described as minimally invasive surgery. Heritage preservation is thereby understood to mean not the uncompromising retention of all original features but rather a respectful approach that underscores their strengths. The sculptural dynamism of Erich Mendelsohn’s original building, designed in 1929-1930 as the administrative base of the German Metalworkers’ Union, is echoed within by sweeping, open-plan spaces
