Hamburg Square – Petersburg Hanging

Hamburg Square – Petersburg Hanging

The Petersburg Hanging was the common form of presenting art in the 19th century in the Hermitage. The intention of hanging the paintings so close to each other was to impress the viewer with the cheer number and not with the individual piece, which draws the attention away from the artist towards the collector. A present-day view of someone coming from Hamburg to St. Petersburg is captured by the number and size of billboards along the streets. In order to exaggerate the effect, the scattered billboards are rearranged in the manner of the Petersburg Hanging, positioned to complete the lacking definition of this space of transit.
